Women's Biking Shorts Information

What’s the difference between men’s and women’s cycling shorts? Well, uh, not to repeat the “talk” your mother gave you in junior high school, but, men and women are shaped somewhat differently, and women’s bike shorts reflect that! They feature a chamois insert that is ergonomically designed for the female anatomy. Typically, it is wider in the back to cushion your sit bones, and narrower in the front so it does not bunch between your legs. Women’s chamois pads have varied densities and channels that reduce pressure in sensitive areas and provide padding where needed. The body of women’s shorts fits comfortably over the hips and bottom, and has a contoured waistband that does not bind or chafe your stomach. The inseam length varies according to style.

Form-fitting women’s biking shorts are usually worn by road cyclists. The tight fit is aerodynamic and prevents excess fabric from chafing your skin or getting caught on the saddle. One of the biggest issues that women have with bike shorts is the leg gripper design, which can constrict the quads, causing what women refer to as “sausage leg”. Most cycling clothing manufacturers now use wide leg hems that gently hug the quads without gripping the skin too tightly. Another common problem is a tight waistband that causes stomach distress, which many brands solve by using a soft, flat, yoga-pant style waistband. Louis Garneau shorts are popular because they have a wide, gripper-free leg band that offers excellent muscle support. The chamois pad in women’s cycling shorts differs between brands, and after owning several pairs of shorts people usually develop a preference for a certain type of pad. Pearl Izumi bike shorts are known for being super cushy, while Giordana cycling shorts have a smaller, denser chamois that some women prefer.

Women’s mountain bike shorts combine a form-fitting inner liner short with a loose outer short. The inner shorts contain a chamois pad, and are either attached to the outer shorts or removable. The outer shorts are made of a durable, quick drying material that protects you against branches and trail crashes. They usually feature pockets and reflective accents for visibility. Mountain bike shorts have a more casual look than lycra shorts, so many women also wear them for commuting and recreational riding. Mt. Borah shorts come in several styles and colors, and are among the best-selling baggy shorts in the cycling apparel biz.

You probably think of padded shorts as being shiny and black, but actually there are a lot of styles, colors, and fabrics to choose from. All of the materials are moisture wicking and stretchy, but they can be shiny, matte, slick, or soft. Black is a popular color, but other solids and color splices are available. Several brands, including Capo, Louis Garneau, and Castelli, make shorts, bike jerseys, and accessories that perfectly match for a snazzy, put-together look.
