Biking Shorts Information

Cycling shorts are usually the first piece of bike-specific clothing that a person purchases, and for good reason. Not only do bike shorts provide padding, but they also have a soft, seamless surface that eliminates chafing. Like much of cycling apparel, biking shorts are often form-fitting. This prevents irritation caused by excess fabric and keeps clothing from getting caught on the saddle. Breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics keep the saddle area comfortable and fresh. A thrifty feature of summer shorts is that they can easily be converted to spring or fall pieces by pulling on a pair of leg warmers or knee warmers.

The chamois, pronounced like “shammy,” is the padded insert that gives bike shorts their magic! The majority of modern shorts use an insert made of sweat-wicking synthetic materials, rather than traditional chamois leather. A good chamois is seam free and is attached to clothing using flat stitches that make minimal contact with the skin. Some inserts have channels or perforations for airflow, are molded to be ergonomic, or are antibacterial. Women’s cycling shorts and men’s cycling shorts differ in that they use a chamois design that is specific to each anatomy. Because the pad is intended to be used in contact with the skin, shorts should be worn without undergarments while riding, and it’s a good idea to wash them after each use.

Road cyclists are often seen dressed in form-fitting road cycling shorts made of lycra. Black is the most popular color, but for those who want to jazz up their wardrobe, white bottoms and shorts that match specific jerseys are available. The next-to-skin fit is aerodynamic and less likely to rub or irritate. Tightly fitting fabric compresses muscles to help delay fatigue, and effectively wicks moisture away from the surface of the skin. Leg grippers or leg bands ensure that the hem stays in place.

Loose-fitting bicycle shorts, sometimes referred to as mountain bike shorts, are worn when aerodynamics are not a concern, or when the rider is on and off the bike and wants a more casual look. They are perfect for mountain biking, commuting, touring, and just riding around for fun. They look like casual shorts on the outside, but have a form-fitting inner pair of shorts with a chamois. The outer shorts can be attached or separate from the liner, and are made of quick-drying material that might feature pockets. These bottoms are an excellent choice for riders who want the comfort of bike shorts, but who don’t want to wear spandex.

Most cyclists try several types of shorts before determining a favorite style. One chamois might be preferred for short distances and another for long distances. People who ride a lot of miles sometimes mix up shorts so as not to get too used to one pair. Whatever arrangement a cyclist negotiates with his or her shorts is up to that person. Padded bike shorts are arguably the most important accessory for maximizing comfort on the bike.
