Bike Jersey Information
Bike-friendly features are what make cycling jerseys essential to a cyclist’s wardrobe. A good jersey has three rear pockets in which to store food, a cell phone, spare tube, and other riding necessities. Mountain bike jerseys often have a zippered pocket that keeps swag from bouncing out on the trails. A front zipper allows for customized ventilation, and many cycling jerseys have a full length zipper for maximum airflow and for easy on and off. Jerseys use lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that sometimes offer UV and antibacterial protection, synthetic materials are popular, but wool is a perennial classic because it is excellent at regulating temperature and eliminating odors. Road bike jerseys use flat seams to reduce skin irritation and are constructed with features, like raglan sleeves, that allow for freedom of movement on the bike.
Like all bike apparel, jerseys come in a plenitude of shapes, colors, and sizes. Though often more form-fitting than casual wear, jerseys range from a tight racer cut to a more generous club cut. Cycling jerseys made for road riding are typically more form-fitting than mountain biking jerseys, but this is not a steadfast rule. Women’s cycling jerseys are cut for a female specific shape, and fit differently than men’s cycling jerseys. High-visibility, fluorescent colors are a popular choice because they allow bicyclists to be seen in low-light conditions. Pro cycling jerseys and vintage prints are also favorite designs.
In warm weather, short sleeve jerseys keep the sun off shoulders and protect skin from possible abrasions due to crashing. On the hottest days, a sleeveless jersey can be the breeziest option. Summer jerseys are constructed of fabrics that wick sweat and promote evaporative cooling; you'll find this same textile technology in cycling shorts. Lightweight long sleeve jerseys can be used as sun protection. Winter cycling jerseys are ideal for cool to downright nasty conditions, depending on the weight of the fabric. Some thermal jerseys even offer wind or water protection. Moisture-wicking is as important in winter clothing as it is in summer wear, because it keeps the skin dry. Dry skin equals warm skin!
There are no hard-and-fast rules that pertain to cycling jerseys. Just like anything, people have preferences: hidden zipper verses full length zipper, elastic hem verses no hem, screaming yellow or classic black. Basically, when it comes to choosing a jersey, the one that feels most comfortable to the rider is the right one!
