Bib Shorts Information

Ah, there is nothing like slipping on a brand new pair of bib shorts! The body of the shorts is identical to regular cycling shorts, in that it features leg grippers and a chamois insert. Bibs differ in that they eliminate the waistband, stay completely smooth against the skin, and have a polished look. Any riders that want to take the comfort level up a few notches should try them!

The most important feature of biking bibs is the lack of a waistband. Soft, breathable fabric bib straps that are hardly noticeable against the skin keep the shorts from falling down. The lightweight fabric of the shorts extends higher around the abdomen to support the core without adding bulk. Because there is no physical waistband, the shorts lie flat against the skin and never pinch, chafe, or cause abdominal distress. Another plus is that the back will never be exposed due to jersey ride-up. The layers stay put, so riding is more comfortable, and the cycling kit always looks good!

Women’s bib shorts are becoming increasingly easier to find. They differ from men’s bib shorts in that they are designed for a female anatomy. Women’s bibs sometimes have clasps and other features that make it easier to lower shorts without having to remove a jersey or jacket. This makes restroom stops a lot less of a hassle, especially in cold weather.

Like all cycling clothing, the fit of bib shorts is specifically tailored to the riding position. It is common for bib straps to feel tight while worn standing upright. This is okay, because on the bike, the straps will lie flat without pulling, and the body of the shorts will fit without extra fabric. Proper fit ensures that the chamois stays in place and that no part of the shorts causes friction. Bibs should be worn with the straps next to the skin or over a base layer -- the jersey goes on top.

Summer bib shorts use lightweight fabric that is breathable and moisture-wicking. Without a bulky waistband, they sometimes feel cooler than regular bike shorts. Knee or leg warmers can be worn in spring or fall to lengthen the season. In winter, matching a pair of thermal leg warmers with insulated bib shorts will take you all the way through winter without breaking down to purchase a pair of tights.

The advantages of bib shorts are not only for competitive cyclists or the most avid riders! It might be that these people are turned onto bibs sooner, and once a cyclists rides in them, he or she never goes back. Because of the incredible comfort that they offer, the bib shorts story should be spread to all cycling enthusiasts.
