Long Sleeve Jersey Information
Long sleeve jerseys cover the arms, are more breathable than jackets, and come in several weights for different types of weather. They are typically worn over a base layer or on their own. Like all cycling apparel, jerseys are cut to accommodate the bicycling position and have details that increase comfort on the ride.
Because of the risks associated with sun exposure, it is not a bad idea to wear lightweight, light-colored long sleeves on sunny days. Protecting arms from the sun with breathable fabric often helps to keep the body temperature cooler. In brisk fall or spring weather, a light thermal long sleeve jersey can be worn over a base layer. Winter cycling jerseys are thick and provide warmth on cold days. Thermal jerseys might feature a fleece interior or wind protection panels, and are typically more breathable and stretchy than insulated jackets.
Raglan sleeves provide freedom of movement in the shoulders. The back of the jersey is longer to cover the body while in the riding position. Full length zippers allow the top to be taken on and off like a jacket. A zipper garage is added at the collar to protect the chin, or at the bottom of the zip to prevent the metal from snagging shorts. Three rear pockets or a zippered back pocket can be used to store ride essentials. Long sleeve bike jerseys are commonly constructed of lightweight, medium weight, or thermal moisture-wicking fabrics that have a high degree of stretch. Reflective piping or accents are added to improve visibility.
A long sleeve jersey fits an important niche in the cycling clothing family because it provides warmth and protection, but also feels lightweight, breathable, and moves with the body.
