Cycling Apparel
We cyclists do not dress to show off our Herculean quads or blind passersby with bright colors. There is a reason for wearing cycling apparel while on your road bike, mountain bike, and or trusty commuter! Cycling clothing keeps us comfortable in the saddle, through the changing weather conditions that we encounter on a single ride and throughout the seasons. From sunny, summer days, to nasty conditions that keep motorists off the road, quality biking apparel helps us to feed our appetite for miles on two-wheels.
Choosing summer cycling apparel is easy: cycling shorts or bib shorts, lightweight and wicking short sleeve jerseys or sleeveless jerseys, short fingered cycling gloves, and Coolmax socks complete the outfit. Bike shorts are the most necessary piece of biking clothing, as they protect tender areas with a seamless chamois. A breathable summer jersey has accessible rear pockets, and a front zipper for ventilation. Biking jerseys and biking shorts use lightweight fabrics that are often antibacterial and UV protectant.
In cool spring or fall weather, cycling shorts can be transformed into knickers or tights by adding a pair of knee warmers or leg warmers. Combine arm warmers with a short sleeve jersey or wear a long sleeve jersey. Cycling vests are invaluable, because they protect the core without overheating. Wind and water resistant cycling jackets that can be tucked into a back pocket are ideal for changing temperatures.
We cyclists don’t ride in winter because we like to punish ourselves -- it’s actually possible to stay comfy and cozy in the most gnarly weather conditions. Proper laying is key. Base layers add warmth and keep skin dry by pulling moisture away from its surface. Windproof cycling jackets and cycling-specific rain jackets constructed of technologically advanced fabrics are a stronghold in foul conditions. Thermal tights and rain pants protect legs from cold and wet weather. Cycling socks, shoe covers, gloves, and insulated caps round out a winter cycling clothing outfit by keeping extremities warm and dry.
In addition to matching cycling clothing to riding conditions, it is important that your clothing fit properly for comfort on the bike. Typically, biking apparel is more form-fitting than casual wear. Stretchy fabric with a tighter fit eliminates excess material that can irritate skin, enhances moisture-wicking, and allows the body to move freely while in the bicycling position. Women’s cycling apparel differs from men’s cycling apparel in that it is specifically designed for a female shape -- it is not just a smaller version of men’s.
The bottom line: riding bikes will always be fun, but proper apparel can make the ride much more enjoyable. Whether we have a tangible destination or are just out to spend quality time with the trusty steed, cycling clothing provides comfort, assures us that we can be prepared for the weather conditions that we encounter, and gives us the freedom to ride anytime we want!
